Sanctuary and endless victimhood: The Amiable Skeptics featuring Adam Baldwin!

Be careful what you wish for, as both Adam Baldwin and I warn in today’s episode — you just might get it! For instance, Eric Adams used to love lecturing people about the necessity for sanctuary cities like NYC, but has changed his mind once he had to start sharing the costs with border states. Similarly, transgender activists insisted that sex is just a social construct — but now are balking at “transracial” claims. Was Rachel Dolezal just ahead of her time, or do we live in a decadent spiral where victimhood has become the most valued social currency — and people will steal it to get ahead? We also get into Biden Inc, so get ready for a real mix of topics today!

Welcome back to our VIP video series “The Amiable Skeptics,” featuring my friend Adam Baldwin! Adam is well-known for his long and storied Hollywood career, starting with My Bodyguard, and especially for his roles in Full Metal Jacket, Firefly, its film sequel SerenityChuck, and The Last Ship.

Adam quotes James Lindsay in calling this “Transhausen by proxy” in many cases, especially with children. The lure of victimhood and its virtue-signaling social cachet is too strong for parents who want to exploit their children for social standing, in the same way that stage mothers and abusive sports fathers exploit their children. Actually, “I think the [sports] moms were actually worse,” I say, “the ones who would scream obscenities at the umpires.”

“Uncle Rico-ism from Napoleon Dynamite,” Adam replies, and then breaks into a brief chorus of “Glory Days.”

At the end of all this victimhood and “sanctuary city” nonsense is a narrative about America, we both argue. “It’s the abolition of normal, again,” Adam says. “It’s about creating chaos, fomenting chaos, not bringing people together.”

More highlights:

  • “The more you subsidize something,” Adam notes about sanctuary cties and dependency, “the more of it you will get. And that’s what they’ve been doing and now they’re reaping, they’re reaping what they’ve sown. And will the residents of New York City change their mind and vote [Eric Adams] out? Apparently not.”
  • “The whole sanctuary city thing is part of this victimology,” I say. “This sort of false victimology that somehow America is victimizing people every single second of the day, and immigration policy is victimizing people who are crossing the border illegally, because all they really want to be is Americans, even though we have a perfectly legal way to go about becoming Americans.”
  • “And where did all this money come from,” Adam asks about Joe Biden, “on a meager public servant’s salary over all these years? His wife certainly wasn’t making up for it as a teacher,” he scoffs. Hunter Biden and Joe’s brothers … were able to gather all these millions of dollars from overseas enemies, if you will. He’s compromised.”

That’s just a taste of today’s episode. Watch it all, and join the conversation in the comments!
