TV show plot involves allegation of sexual assault by Gov. DeSantis

I’ve never watched The Good Fight. It’s a legal drama which has run for six season and last night was the final episode, i.e. the series finale. Apparently the plot of last night’s show involved a gay recurring character accusing Gov. Ron DeSantis of sexually assaulting him at CPAC.

The finale of the courtroom drama’s sixth and final season premiered on Thursday with the episode titled “The End of Everything.” In a clip widely shared online, the episode features the main character Diane Lockhart, played by Christine Baranski, meeting with Felix Staples, a flamboyant, gay provocateur who has made appearances in earlier seasons of the long-running show. In a conference room surrounded by lawyers, Staples claims that he was sexually assaulted by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who forced him to have oral sex following a CPAC conference while interning for his office.

Diane immediately dismisses the accusation as politically motivated “bulls—” despite Staples claiming to have DNA proof. The lawyers spend the episode gathering evidence to expose Staples for lying. He eventually confesses to fabricating the allegations to tarnish the Florida governor’s reputation, because it will put former President Trump “ahead in the polling” in 2024’s presidential race.

Here’s the clip:

It’s pretty interesting that this episode uses a stain on a red t-shirt as proof. It’s an obvious callback to the blue dress and Monica Lewinsky. Of course that incident was entirely real and involved a Democratic president, a president who’d also been credibly accused of rape.

The clip above isn’t the first time in the episode where the allegation is made. That comes in another scene which you can watch at Newsbusters. Here’s a partial transcript:

Felix: Well, it’s not what I need, Diane. It’s what you need. As you may know, I’m no longer gay.

Diane: You’re not?

Felix: No, I don’t think I ever was. I’m with a wonderful woman now, Chalena, Chalanna. But in any case, I was interning for a certain governor. And he took me to Texas for CPAC. Back at the hotel, I argued with him that I was not gay, and I would not have sеx with him, but he would not take no for an answer…and he forced me to fellate him. I was repulsed, I threatened to go to HR, and he fired me. That’s why I’m here today.

Marissa: Tell her which governor.

Felix: Well, as you know, I have my pick of any job in Republican circles, but I’m also an elite member of the Disney World Loyalty Program, which is why I agreed to intern for Governor Ron DeSantis.

Apparently there are some people on the right who watch the show who said the clip above was out of context because, ultimately, the accuser is shown to be a liar, albeit one hoping to help Trump.

I get that the conclusion of the show was that this was all a lie but it doesn’t change the fact that the whole story is an excuse to float the idea that maybe Gov. DeSantis is a) secretly gay and b) someone who might sexually assault a staffer. It’s being played for laughs but I remember the blue dress and there weren’t any Democrats laughing back then. It’s just sort of fascinating how one of the low points for a Democratic politician in recent history becomes an extended gag about a conservative politician through the magic of Hollywood.
